New-age music is a genre of music intended to create artistic inspiration , relaxation , and optimism. It is used by listeners for yoga , massage , meditation ,  reading as a method of stress management  to bring about a state of ecstasy rather than trance ,   or to create a peaceful atmosphere in their home or other environments, and is associated with environmentalism and New Age spirituality. New-age music includes both acoustic forms, featuring instruments such as flutes , piano , acoustic guitar and a wide variety of non-Western acoustic instruments , and electronic forms, frequently relying on sustained synth pads or long sequencer -based runs. Vocal arrangements were initially rare in the genre, but as it has evolved vocals have become more common, especially those featuring Native American -, Sanskrit -, or Tibetan -influenced chants, or lyrics based on mythology such as Celtic legends. There is no exact definition of new-age music. New-age music was influenced by a wide range of artists from a variety of genres. Tony Scott 's Music for Zen Meditation is considered to be the first new-age recording.

In the second essay for this series, I would like to define New Music and contemporary music. These are two terms that are often viewed as equivalent, but I will argue that they have different meanings. In my view, New Music is a term that embodies a wide variety of artistic projects, mainly focused on sonic forms—though secondarily may also be expressed through the visual, the literary, or the theatrical—which position themselves under the umbrella of modernity in a critical manner.

What is New Music? New music is an extension of the classical music tradition, and it represents the cutting and creative edge of classical music. In addition, new music can incorporate elements of many different musical genres, including classical, jazz, rock, world music and others. In the end, new music is simply that: newly created music written by living composers. For Zeitgeist, new music means working with variety of new composers of all ages, many from the local community. New music also means exploration: Zeitgeist plays music that pushes boundaries into new sound worlds, new influences, new techniques, new structural forms, new media, new ways of expressing and understanding the world we live in today. It may take repeated hearings or a few varied experiences to develop a personal understanding of new and sometimes complex music.
